Expert— We have been spading and tilling coffee grounds into compact clay soil for approximately 30 years at three different residences in an effort to create a fertile mixture.  Now I am wondering whether coffee grounds might be a viable alternative to bark chips as a ground cover [if the aroma is not off-putting].  I have no trouble coming home with 50 to 100 pounds of used grounds daily by stopping at four different Starbucks on my home from the gym at approximately 11:00 am.   Roger Hennagin

Hello! I was gifted (as in, someone offloaded a stash) 12 lbs of ground organic coffee that has "higher palmitic acid and higher in caffeine." It is absolutely and positively undrinkable so we would like to be able to use it in our garden. We have blueberry plants and Endless Summer hydrangeas that I know like acid, but we are unclear if we can put some of the coffee right near the plants, if we should mix it all (!) in our compost bin. We have a high concentration of clay in our soil and we grow both edibles and inedibles. My Master Gardener friends keep telling me to connect with this site - I am hoping that someone will advise us on how to best use this coffee in our gardens. Coffee grounds in your vegetable garden #575307

Are  they a good addition to other compost or a bad idea?  I know many places like Starbucks or Einsteins will give customers free coffee grounds for their gardens, but I have also heard they are bad for that in general.  What do you say on adding them with other compost?

Coffee grounds in strawberry bed #554600

Hello,

Is it beneficial to sprinkle and then gently work used coffee grounds into the soil around my strawberry plants?  I started this year's strawberry bed with fresh bare root strawberries, which are starting to take root.  I tested the soil in the strawberry bed and it's a bit on the alkaline side (7.5).

Lots of info out there about mixing used coffee grounds into the soil for the veg garden (non-composted). Other articles say it will make the soil too acidic. I know it depends on the original composition of the soil, but is there a good overall rue of thumb?
