I own a 50 acre parcel of land in Pittsfield, VT. This property had been used as a dairy farm for over a hundred years but was abandoned in the 1960's. I purchase it in 1999. I am interested in developing an apple orchard on this property. I am reaching out to you to see if know if the University or the State of Vermont has outreach or extension programs that might be helpful to me in getting my project started. Weak calf with diarrhea caused by dark brown colostrum? #309449

Calf out of first calf heifer, after he was born had to milk the heifer to get colostrum for the calf and noticed that the colostrum was dark brown in color and lumpy, looked like lumpy chocolate milk. Calf did suck then get up and suck a bit, calf was up and moving around a bit. Now today the calf is lethargic and has diarrhea and will not stand up. This is about 3 days after his birth, calf was born on Thursday. Could the colostrum have been contaminated with something and if so, what?

Extension for Inherited IRA #297207

Is there an RMD extension for a spouse (Age 76) that inherited husband's IRA in 2015?  Husband had been drawing RMD for several years and died on 6/02/2015.  Spouse is assembling information and did not have information to broker until 12/26/2015.  Broker could not issue RMD before end of year.

Mature Maple Tree looks tired #293788

I have a mature maple tree in my back yard We have not done much with this tree, but I noticed this last year that it did not look robust. I know that it was a drought year, but I wondered if feeding the tree might help. The house dates from 1960 and the tree is likely close to the same vintage. It is in the middle of a flat lawn. I assume that 1) I would need to test the soil,2) select fertilizer based on these tests. If this is correct are any of the soil testing labs listed on this web site more appropriate than others? What is the best source for high quality fertilizer that is likely to be of maximum benefit to the tree without causing pollution? Thank you

Waterfalls and erosion #277145

We live in Elk Creek and are the fortunate owners of Flag Pond Falls aka Benkelman's Falls. In about 1960, my dad built a picturesque retaining wall at the foot of the falls. In the past few years we have had several flood incidents which washed out part of that 50 year old wall. It is a mess now and we need a "thorough analysis of the situation" and suggestions for possible actions to help with the erosion while maintaining the beauty of the falls.

Yellowing Maple tree. #275428

Hi, 1st time I have ever used this service.

We have a lovely great big Norway Red Maple.  Last year the leaves on half the tree started turning yellow and this year they have all turned yellow.  We have fed it lots of iron liquid in ground and spray.  Still yellow?  Have asked and received many answers.  So time to ask where I should have started.  How do I handle this?  Please advise me what to do.  Thank You,

While working at a cannery in the 1960's I came across the Chehalem BlackBerry which tasted like the ground trailing small wild blackberries found in the woods. I would like to find plants for this berry. I live in the Oregon City area.thanks for your help.

My name is Kathleen Dean, my late husband Don Dean was from Ironton (grad '52). His mother lived on Porter Gap Road. Ma Dean had a vine growing on her side porch. For want of a better word, it was a "Potato Vine". At least, a tiny-like potato grew on the vine. I never tried to eat it. [smile] I have tried to find out what the name of this vine was though. No one in the area, in the 1960's knew what the name of the vine was. I just know that Ma Dean had the vine growing up a trellis that shaded the porch and gave her some privacy. I have been a Master Gardener Volunteer [MGV] since 2005 in Knox County Ohio plus as of 2013 I am also an Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist [OCVN]. I am always looking for interesting plants to grow. I am sorry I cannot tell you anymore about this "Potato Vine" accept the tiny potato was only about 1/2-inch long. It would be ice to visit your MG group sometime. Thanks for your help.
