Fast Growing Trees In Hill County TX #248402

Asked May 30, 2015, 5:46 PM EDT

I am considering putting an offer on 10 acres in Hillsboro, TX, but the property does not have any trees on it.  I would like to plant about 20 fast growing trees around the property and a few slower more hardy ones as well.  I have read that cottonwoods will grow very fast.  What would you suggest as the best trees to plant in this area and when is the best time to plant them?  Also, how old do they have to be before I would be able to let horses into the pasture where they are growing?

I am always leary of sites with out trees; i.e. were the trees pushed out or is there no soil.  If the site has very little or no soil, then you don't typically have trees.  So I would suggest you google NRCS and pull up this site and find your potential site on it and see what type of soil that you have.

I would suggest that if your soil is ok, then you consider some of the oak trees; red for fast growing and live oak for more hardy ones. It would be wise to put some type of cage around the trees to prevent damage from the horses.

Good luck!!

Larry, Thank you so much for your response. You have made my choice easy. I am not much of a gardener and I figured if there is dirt I plant enough trees something would grow. The pasture grass property I asked about is very sparse, you can see a lot ground between the grass. I have decided to go with another property. It has beautiful trees and a lush pasture. The house is from 1960, but I figure is easier to upgrade the house than the land.
