Mid-Ohio wine grape disease #929676

Asked April 26, 2026, 2:33 PM EDT

I've a small vineyard that in the past few years has a "disease" that seems to affect the Noiret variety the most. I've tried to attach a pdf. photo of an example but don't know if it will work for you. It is many brown tubular growths about 1/2" long on the cordons and main trunk. Then that part of the vine seems to get pithy and dies. It's not uncommon for new growth to occur at the ground level. I don't know if this is animal or fungal or?. I'm from OSU class of 1970.

Hi Mr. Easterday,

Great to hear from you, an OSU alum from 1970!

What you see on the cordon are aerials roots from the past a few years. It may be a way for the vine to respond some types of stress.

I noticed that the grape tie in the picture is too tight and is girdling the cordon. You may want to check all grape ties on the vine to make sure they are loose enough for the canes, cordons or trunk(s).

Cordons can be damaged by cold injuries. In Ohio, grape growers replace cordons every 6-10 years or so. You can select a new shoot or two and train it or them as a replacement cordon or cordons.

Hope this helps.

Happy gardening!
