Grapevine trunk bursted with roots like growth #700656

Asked July 14, 2020, 12:30 PM EDT

Hello, Please see picture, is this a common problem in grapes in this region? The vine was doing well and thriving with fruits... then everything wrong seemed to happen to it. Now the plant has wilted all the way to this seasons growth. Can it be saved? Your answer/insight much appreciated! Lynea

Those look like aerial roots. It happens when root tissue forms out of the above ground part of the vine. Aerial roots aren't super common, but I have seen them on vines in Michigan before. By itself, it's not usually a problem, especially if there's only a few roots coming off the vine. However, the vine may be making aerial roots in response to being under stress, and this looks like a pretty extreme case. Cold damage from the winter, or very wet soils are two common stressors that can result in aerial rooting. Here is an article from the University of Minnesota Extension that describes aerial rooting in grapes and some things to consider: https://blog-yard-garden-news.extension.umn.edu/2020/04/creepy-but-harmless-grape-aerial-roots.html

From the first picture with the roots all the way up the trunk, I'm guessing that you got some cold damage there, and the vine tried to repair itself. Check to make sure that your soils aren't waterlogged or too dry. If it's been very dry, the vine might be struggling to get water to the shoots.

Thank you, I am glad to see an immediate response. It has been really hot and humid lately, then deep down pour. Good to know it isn’t some type of diseases. Will keep my fingers crossed and mind the soil/water.

It’s kind of happening all over my garden with the tomatoes/peppers/squashes where the trunk burst and callused over. Growth is generally stunted and leaves curled. First year gardening so lots of learn :)
