Planting Sun King under sugar Maple or Pine tree? #869305

Can I plant a Sun King under 40 year old Sugar Maple or Pine tree? My hydrangea s died after 2 years under pine tree. It's also about15 feet from a neighbors big buck thorn tree. I keep the seeds from producing more in my yard. Would eithe location work for Sun King? Also can I plant a limelight Hydrangea in a pot in that location and maybe move it against a fence with mulch in the winter ? How big of a pot would it need.

Adding plants to a rock garden #868390

Three years ago I bought a house in Longmont. The front yard is largely grass with a border of rocks about three to five feet wide in places. They are smaller rocks and in some places there are shrubs and some random plots of tulips and daffodils early in the summer. My initial goal was to remove the rock and replace it with dirt to plant some waterwise shrubs, flowers and grasses but that involves a lot of labor so in the meantime I’ve been growing some of the plants I want in the future in large pots on top of the rock areas. Over the last two years several of those plants have self seeded and are starting to come up through the rocks. This is much easier than removing the rocks and I’m wondering if it’s feasible to fill in the entire area of rock without removing any of it? And if you have any suggestions for what plants might grow best through the rocks that are native to Colorado and have low water requirements?

Hello, I live in Washtenaw County and last year I planted about 18 Fruit Trees 10 Cherries, 5 Apple and 3 Asian Plums. The trees are about 1-1/2" stocks and they stand about 5 ft. to 6-1/2 ft. They are blooming now very well, I wanted to ask what should I be doing at this stage because of the 1) cold weather coming, what can I do to Protect the trees? 2) I need a pest control regimen, In the past I have used Neem Oil 3) Any pruning at this stage? and what type. Thank you for your help

Mulch over cardboard to smother existing vegetation #857642

We have cut down a garden area of overgrown bushes, and I would like to lay cardboard topped with mulch to kill any remaining vegetation, in preparation for a future native pollinator garden. We are new to the area and are looking for recommendations for types of mulch for this type of garden, and also where to get the mulch in bulk. Any additional recommendations about how best to do this - time of year, depth of mulch, length of time before planting, addition of top soil, etc - is most welcome. Thanks.

Planting after removing lawn #846808

We removed all of the lawn in our backyard in the spring with a goal to create new planting beds for native/pollinator friendly plants/trees. The soil is hard packed (it was a lawn for 40 years!) and difficult, if not impossible, to work. What would be the best way to prep this area for planting in the spring? And what would be some suggestions for mid-sized trees we could plant to provide some shade areas for some of the beds? Thanks in advance!

Waterlogged or diseased? #845585

One of three crimson king maple trees in my yard is in trouble. Picture 1 shows neighbor's pine tree, which has been turning brown over the past year and my c.k.maple in obvious distress. Picture 2 includes a large rubber duck, placed there to look over ground that is sometimes covered with water. Picture 3 shows a large split in the c.k.m's trunk - not an external injury, but caused from within. Pictures 4 and 5 are of leaves from the c.k.m that is in trouble. Picture 6 shows leaves from a different c.k.m, about 60 feet away and on elevated ground. The neighbor's pine tree is the third one that had turned brown over past 4 years - the others were away from the waterlogged ground. Is the problem with my crimson king maple likely to be due to very wet ground or possibly due to disease, possibly shared from pine trees?

Cedar Wood Chip Mulch or Eucalyptus Mulch #845215

I live in Frederick, MD and have this spring, summer had severe problems with earwigs coming under my door from very nearby black wood chip mulch around a shrub. I would like to replace this mulch with either Cedar Wood CHIP Mulch or Eucalyptus Mulch, but find Cedar WC hard to find locally, though saw an open pile of it available from Walmart, and also a supplier DK Hardware WV. Eucalyptus is available locally. My area is about 5’ x 5’, How much would I need and what of the two do you recommend, or other that you recommend. I would not be doing the work myself and also want to know if, as I think it should, the old black chip mulch first be removed? Thanks.

We just planted 3 apple trees. I was wondering what types of about pests or disease are common in NW Ohio, and what is the best way to care for the new, young trees to promote healthy growing (ie, fertilizer requirements, pest/disease sprays, frequent watering, etc)?

Problem with recenty-planted Brandywine Crabapple Tree #833652

Two years ago we paid $1000 to have a Brandywine crabapple tree planted in our front yard. Within the first few months, some of the tree's branches developed yellow leaves and then died. I cut off the dead branches and the tree seemed to survive but did not exhibit any new growth. For the next two springs, the tree initially seemed healthy and produced a lot of flowers. However, each year, once the flowers were gone, the tree immediately started developing yellow leaves and dying branches and showed little sign of any new growth. This same phenomenon is happening again this year. And while the tree is not totally dead, more branches are being removed each year with little to no growth coming to replace them. So the tree's days seem numbered. Do you have any idea of what the problem might be with this tree? Is there any hope for it? I have attached a few pictures of the tree in its current state. Any advice you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, John C.
