Planting Sun King under sugar Maple or Pine tree? #869305

Asked May 20, 2024, 3:27 PM EDT

Can I plant a Sun King under 40 year old Sugar Maple or Pine tree? My hydrangea s died after 2 years under pine tree. It's also about15 feet from a neighbors big buck thorn tree. I keep the seeds from producing more in my yard. Would eithe location work for Sun King? Also can I plant a limelight Hydrangea in a pot in that location and maybe move it against a fence with mulch in the winter ? How big of a pot would it need.

Hennepin County Minnesota

Expert Response

It will grow there but it may not develop as much color in full shade.  Part shade is best.  Hydrangea whether in pot or in ground also is a part shade plant.  If these plants don’t get enough sun they will not thrive.
