trunk bend question - will it not be noticeable years in the future #948188

Asked November 06, 2026, 1:05 PM EST

This is the second fall since I planted the black gum tree.  It is 5' 2" tall, and the black arrow in the picture is 42" up from the ground.  Over a few seasons, my plan is to make the branch with the red arrow the leader and cut off the indicated branch (blue line). Question:  over its long life, will the bends in the leader trunk become less and less noticeable as the trunk gets thicker and thicker? FYI - The Green Gable™ Black Gum (Nyssa sylvatica 'NSUHH') reaches a mature height of 40 to 50 feet and a spread of 20 to 25 feet (with some sources listing up to 30 feet). David

If it is in full sun, as the plant matures, it will straighten the central trunk, but you will need to stake the new leader in a more vertical position. See the graphic on our Pruning Trees page. It may take 1-2 growing seasons (so 12-24 months) to get the new leader to grow and thicken so it remains straight.  As the tree grows, check the attachments so they aren't getting too tight and cutting into the bark, probably about once a month in the growing season.
