Trimming of Oak trees #948179

Asked November 06, 2026, 11:48 AM EST

Hello, we are planning to have our old oak trees trimmed and dead wood removed soon but I would like to be sure that it is safe to do so at this time. I am in Stillwater, MN and we had a frost this morning, 11/6 and I believe this is our first. It is safe to trim now?

Expert Response

Patricia,

If the branch is already dead, then you can remove it now. For branches that are still alive, I would wait until late winter (around February) to do so.

Historically, oak wilt risk in our area is highest in April and lasts until July. Real-time risk based on weather models can be found here.

Best,

Shane
