boxwood question #947917

Asked October 30, 2026, 11:09 AM EDT

What is the difference between boxwood blight and the one caused by moth disease? Is there a treatment for either or should I just remove them? 2 of my 4 mature boxwoods are completely brown. The other 2 are somewhat affected (less than half of the shrub). Are those 2 doomed as well?

Expert Response

Thank you for contacting MSU Extension regarding your boxwoods. Boxwood blight is a fungal disease, whereas the condition you described as “moth disease” refers to damage caused by an insect known as the box tree moth. Treatments are available for both; however, an accurate diagnosis is necessary to select the appropriate pesticide.

Please send photographs of your shrubs so we can help identify the cause of the damage. The first two resources provided may also help you identify the problem. More than one issue may be affecting your boxwoods.

If you decide to replace your boxwoods, the third resource provides information on alternative shrubs to consider.
