Is this a Vine Growing up my Tree Inside the Bark? #947872

Asked October 29, 2026, 12:12 PM EDT

Good morning/afternoon. It's a White Oak. I've noticed this tree losing bark in the first five feet up the trunk. Today I noticed a shape where the bark is gone, which prompts my question. I assume this tree is doomed, but its crown appears to be healthy. Is this common? Should I do anything in the future for my other trees, most of which are White Oak? Thanks, Glen

Expert Response

Hi,

This is callous wood from an older wound on the tree trunk. The inner wood doesn't look healthy. We would recommend consulting with a certified arborist or licensed tree expert. You can search for one in your area using the links provided. Feel free to share their recommendations with us. They can assess your other trees as well. The condition of this oak may not be treatable and is unlikely to harm the other oaks.
