Wild Plum #947254

Asked October 17, 2026, 6:24 PM EDT

My neighbor has a plum tree and I think that it has created suckers that invade my lawn every year. Mowing and herbicides don’t seem to affect them. They just keep coming back. How can I get rid of them without killing my lawn?

Expert Response

Good Morning,

Thanks for your question.

Please click on the following link about dealing with suckers on fruit trees: https://yardandgarden.extension.iastate.edu/how-to/managing-suckers-fruit-ornamental-and-shade-trees

This website has a section on how and when to remove suckers.

If you use a herbicide on them, they might be connected to the roots of the tree and could harm the tree. You might have a conversation with your neighbor about the issue.

Good Luck!
