Birch pruning #946996

Asked October 13, 2026, 12:19 PM EDT

I have a birch tree in zone 6B that needs lower branches cut off.  What is the best time of year to do this?

Cuyahoga County Ohio

Expert Response

The best time to prune trees including birches is their
dormant season (late fall to mid-winter), prior to pre-spring sap flow (March-April). Pruning during the dormant season minimizes stress on plants. Plants will not expend energy to heal the pruned wound. In addition, pruning cuts can be made without the risk of pests and pathogens entering the wound because pests and diseases are dormant. Do not prune in spring. Birch trees "bleed" a heavy flow of sap during this time, which weakens the tree and attracts pests.
