Hi, do you have a list of fruit varieties that do well in Wilmington, NC? Interested in plum trees, blackberries, blueberries, and anything else that performs well.

New Hanover County North Carolina

Expert Response

Hi, Cat!

We do not have a list of cultivars for this area, but I can tell you the following:

- Commonly grown blueberries in New Hanover County are usually a type of Southern Highbush or Rabbit-eye. There are no documented cultivars that are low performing.

- Commonly grown figs in this area include Brown Turkey, Celeste, and Olympia.

- Natchez is one of the most commonly grown blackberry varieties. Apache and Kiowa varieties are not recommended.

- Outside of the native Chickasaw plum, plums and peaches usually do not perform well here due to the humidity.

Here's a great resource for fruit cultivation in our area: https://content.ces.ncsu.edu/extension-gardener-handbook/15-tree-fruit-and-nuts#:~:text=Table%2015%E2%80%931.%20Fruit%20cultivar%20recommendations%20for%20North%20Carolina.

Thank you!
