How To Protect My Purple Gem Rhododendron During Winter #944909

We just planted the rhodie this spring. It is close to the street, in a mini garden area by the mailbox. There are other plants around it, clematis, day lilies and porcupine grass, but they will all be cut down or dormant before winter. I've read that the rhodie should be protected from strong north winds. I am unsure what to use as the best form of protection and am asking for your recommendation?

Hello John, wrap with regular brown burlap and secure with rope or similar. I would do this after most trees have lost their leaves. You may want to protect it from rabbit damage with fencing too,either before or after the burlap. Makes sure the plant had adequate water before the ground freezes, usually around Thanksgiving.
