If you are referring to suckers (stems arising directly from the trunk base or surface roots), then there is no way to permanently stop a live tree from suckering. For tree some species, it's in their nature to develop multiple trunks (which is what suckers would mature into, if not removed), and in some cases, sucker growth indicates that the tree is under stress or had significant damage (or pruning) in the canopy or trunk.

Tree care professionals or certified pesticide applicators can sometimes apply sucker-suppressing chemicals, but they may not always work or might cause more damage than they're worth (given the cost of hiring someone, compared to just cutting suckers off as they appear). If you want to see if that approach is feasible, we recommend you contact a certified arborist or licensed tree expert to ask what options are available, as we do not have experience with those treatments. If you don't want to have a pesticide applied (and it will require re-application periodically), then the only recourse is to cut down the suckers any time they appear.
