Elm Tree Alternative #943908

We have a Princeton Elm as a street trees along our sidewalk; however, ours and several others on our street are dying or dead. Can you recommend an alternative tree for replacement of the Princeton Elm. It is important to our HOA that any alternative tree blend well with the other elms on the street, thus maples, hornbeams, locusts, etc. would not be feasible. Tom MSU 1978

Based on university research, Hackberry and Japanese Zelkova appear to be strong alternatives because they offer a similar canopy shape and overall appearance that should blend well with the existing elms. Several disease-resistant elm cultivars may also be worth considering, although they can still be affected by other tree health issues.
