Identifying among the 17-20 species of willows found in Michigan requires looking at leaf size, the edge, the back of the leaf. Also, using magnification to see if any gland structures are on the leaf edges, observing when the tree blooms and what type of male or female flowers, seed pods it produces. Buds and bark texture and color are also helpful.

Compare what you have to willow species commonly found in Michigan. Black willow is very common and most resembles coastal plains willows.

How to tell apart black willow from coastal plains willow:The easiest way to distinguish them is by looking at the underside of the leaves. Salix caroliniana leaves have a distinct whitish, waxy (glaucous) underside, whereas Black Willow leaves are green on both sides.
