What kind of bush is this? #943870

Asked August 31, 2026, 1:52 PM EDT

I found this growing in my yard. When it was young I thought it was a rose because of the sawtooth edge on the leaves but it is clearly not. I need to know is it a good natural addition to the yard or should I dig it up?

Hi Jan,

Based on what I can see, you're on the right track--while it's not a rose, it is a member of the rose family; likely a hawthorn or crabapple tree seedling (I can't tell for sure from the photo--if it has thorns, though, it's a hawthorn for sure).

It could be a fine addition to the yard if you have space for it, though because it is likely a seedling its ornamental qualities (flowering, fruit, etc) won't be known for a few years yet.

I hope this is helpful.

Cordially,

John
