Does large fungus a yard fro oak tree suggest tree is not well?

This is a type of wood decay (some are active, some are passive...this would be the former). It might not necessarily doom the tree, since trees do have ways of walling-off decayed areas inside the wood so they don't spread, but we recommend the tree be evaluated by a certified arborist. Arborists can't treat every condition (and wood decay can't be reversed or cured), but they can help narrow-down a diagnosis, assess safety (especially persons with TRAQ certification - tree risk assessment qualification), and look for sources of tree stress that might be able to be alleviated.
