Hello— I believe I have found TSWV in our garden, with no idea where it came from, as we grew the majority of our plants ourselves this year. I’m currently weighing options, as by the time I figure out what it was it seems widespread in plants, including possibly weeds/plants in the yard. I’m not really sure it’s practical to try to eliminate all the plants that have spots on the leaves at this point or even if I could really identify which ones might be a hist, based on the wide range of this virus. I’m not finding a lot of information on this virus in northern climates. There does seem to be some indication that it can persist in seeds, so does that means it’s likely to continue occurring year after year as it spreads in perennial garden plants or annual plants? For example I read that plantain, lambs quarters, dandelions, and island can all be hosts. So if it was in those seeds, it could come back and infect new crops of plants in the future as long as thrips are present, which also seem really hard to get rid of. Also it’s a little unclear to me if it damages production/flowering in other plants, since most of the information seems to be about tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and dahlias. I’m just trying to decide my best options here for now and the future of my yard. Also wondering if beneficial nematodes might help with thrips. I did read the extension pages I found, but it wasn’t that much information. Thanks for any advice!
