Flattened sword fern #941928

The center of some of my sword ferns have become flattened brown and dry. Others growing alongside them are fine. These are old established ferns. Not enough water support all of them? Should I move them?

Older sword ferns tend to stop supporting old growth, but this one appears to have been smashed, perhaps laid on by an animal.
