Hello Patricia,
That is a fungal disease - either leaf blotch or botrytis blight. Without major damage to the plant, I would lean toward leaf blotch. Did you ever send the samples to the MSU Plant and Pest diagnostic lab?
The key in treating this is good sanitation. This fall, cut off all of the growth and dispose of it. Do not leave any leaves or stems on the ground.
