River birch yellow falling leaves #940618

Asked July 27, 2026, 8:49 AM EDT

Our river birch’s leaves (excelsior, MN) are turning yellow and falling off. What should we do?

Hennepin County Minnesota

Expert Response

Water your birch when the soil is dry. At a minimum your tree needs 5 gallons per week. It probably needs more when temps are hot all day and especially if it doesn’t cool down at night.  Heck to see if the soil is damp at a depth of 2 inches, water if it is dry.
