I looked up money tree care information, and the pattern you describe — yellow leaf drop over the last couple of months while the plant is still making new growth — fits stress-related leaf shed, not necessarily total decline [4, 5].

The two most likely issues from your description are:

  • Money tree (Pachira aquatica) does best in indirect light or a mix of sun and shade, and direct sunlight can scorch leaves [1, 2, 3].
  • Root or moisture stress. Money tree needs moist but well-drained soil, and it does not tolerate standing water or overwatering, which can lead to root rot and decline [1, 3].

The recent repotting may also be part of what you're seeing, because root injury from repotting can trigger yellowing and leaf drop as a stress response, even while the plant is still pushing new growth [4, 5].

What I’d do next:

  1. Reduce direct sun exposure by moving it a little farther from windows or otherwise keeping it in bright, indirect light rather than prolonged direct sun [1, 2, 3].
  2. Check drainage carefully and make sure the pot never sits in collected water, since standing water is not tolerated [1, 3].
  3. Watch the watering pattern so the soil stays moist but not waterlogged, because overwatering/root stress is a major cause of decline in money tree [1, 3].
  4. Give it some recovery time after repotting, since stress-related leaf drop can happen after root disturbance [4, 5].

So, in short: your money tree may be reacting to a repotting/root stress, with watering/drainage being the other big thing to rule out [1, 2, 3, 4, 5].
