Maple tree seedling #937047

Asked June 28, 2026, 9:32 AM EDT

I found a germinated seed growing in a bad location (between a fence and downspout) and have transplanted it into a pot. It is growing and now has 4 leaves. Because the leaves have a reddish tint, I think it is a red maple. If it survives, my nephew and his girlfriend are going to plant it in their yard. How do we help it survive? And when will it be ready to plant in the ground. Thank you.

Hi Jo,

Leave it outside in the pot for a month or so and put it in the ground in August or September. Dig grass and weeds out so the tree doesn’t have too much competition. Plant it so the top roots are just below the soil surface. Water regularly until the ground freezes.

If you want to wait to plant until the tree is bigger, in the fall bury the pot holding the little tree in the ground right up to the lip of the pot. Overwintering outside should be fine. Then you can plant next spring.

Good luck!
