Dark spots on leaves of two different trees. #936718

Asked June 24, 2026, 5:24 PM EDT

I’ve attached photos of two trees that we have in pots that we recently got. The first one is a crab apple and the second one is an Ure Pear. I believe that the pear has a blight. The leaves are turning black on places from the tip.

The crab apple has speckles on it.

If these are diseased trees what is the best way to dispose of them?

thank you!

Expert Response

Hello Sarah,  if you purchased the trees from a nursery or retail business you may be able to return them.  Otherwise, U of M Extension recommends burning them, burying them, or bringing them to a commercial composting site.  Home compost bins generally do not get hot enough to kill diseases.
