Small holes over backyard #936694

Asked June 24, 2026, 2:34 PM EDT

There are many small holes all over my backyard lawn as well as with landscaped areas. They are about 1.5 to 2 inches across. Can you tell me what is doing this to my property, and how to stop it? I will try to attach a picture. The holes are approximately 3-4 inches deep.

Hello
This appears to be skunks digging small holes looking for insects. This is typically done overnight. Insects in your soil are a sign of good soil health, but if the holes become excessive, this could indicate you have a large population of grubs.
Here is a bulletin that explains how you can check if you have a population of grubs that needs some sort of control, that is more than 10 grubs per square foot in the area may need control if you choose to do so.

The DNR has information on what you can do to discourage nuisance skunks
