Black spots on leaves #936355

Asked June 22, 2026, 12:08 PM EDT

My 6 year old maple is getting black spots on the lower leaves. We had two, and one died. Now I'm afraid we are going to lose this one too. I don't know what's causing it, can you help?

Expert Response

Thank you for reaching out to Ask Extension. It looks like your maple has anthracnose, which is a fungal disease that causes defoliation.

Here is more information about anthracnose in maples: Maple (Acer spp.)-Anthracnose | Pacific Northwest Pest Management Handbooks and Maple Anthracnose : Landscape : Center for Agriculture, Food, and the Environment (CAFE) at UMass Amherst

Feel free to reach out if you have additional information or questions.
