Clover Lawn/Killing Dandelions #935464

Asked June 14, 2026, 4:06 PM EDT

Hello, we are considering planting clover in our front lawn. Based on a friends advice, we are considering detaching the lawn and overseeding with a blend of purple, white and crimson clover. This is what my friend did and her clover yard looks amazing. Does this sound like a solid, healthy alternative to grass? Also, our yard is overrun with dandelions. I would like to get rid of them without spraying poison chemicals. Should they be removed before overseeding with a clover mix? Can you suggest a safe way to remove them from our lawn? We appreciate your advice, thank you!

Expert Response

The non chemical way to remove dandelions is to water well, meaning enough water to make the ground soft. Pop out or pull out all the dandelions. Just start with one….  Dandelions are perennials so the plant does not die over the winter. The effort will take several years because of the seeds that have been dropped when they flowered. Red and white clover is very pretty. Red clover can get taller than what is generally considered a lawn plant.
