Thank you for reaching out to MSU’s Ask Extension. Although there is no guarantee for what deer will not eat, Eastern Hemlock might be an idea for an evergreen privacy screen that works well in shady spots. This tolerates black walnut’s juglone toxicity and can eventually create an attractive year-round privacy screen. The downside is the deer population as they may eat young hemlocks unless you plant larger 5 ft. to 6 ft. trees that can handle some grazing. Witch Hazel is a tough native shrub that tolerates shade, juglone toxicity and deer. It is not an evergreen but has attractive fall color and naturally fits a woodland edge when planted in masses. Another consideration is native Spicebush that is fairly deer resistant and will naturally create a dense under story. There are no known issues with Spicebush growing next to Black Walnut trees. I have attached an article from Penn State University Extension that provides more ideas and helpful information.
