Best tree to plant #934954

Asked June 10, 2026, 10:03 AM EDT

Hello, I live on lake mtka, MN. 10 ft from the lake. I want to plant a tree to give shade for our small house. Tree will be 20ft from the house.id like tree to be approx 25ft in height and not too wide when mature as its close to the house. Therefore, what kind of tree could I plant that has a deep root system that doesnt spread wide to interfere with foundation. Tall enough to provide shade. Tolerates full sun. Faces south, close to the lake. I need it to provide shade and replace my diseased tree that provides the only shade for our small yard and house. Thank you!

Hennepin County Minnesota

Expert Response

I’m not sure I understand where this tree will be planted. If you are  10 ft from the lake and it will be 20 feet from the house, is that 30’ from the lake? What was the tree that you took down?

Most of the climate ready trees that are recommended for shade will become quite tall. All trees will develop root systems that extend out slightly beyond their canopy.

If you are looking for an understory tree, you may want to consider Serviceberry or East Redbud (Minnesota strain).

You will probably want a tree that can handle wet soil.
