Hello Amy,
First, it is important to confirm that identity of the plant species that you are dealing with in your lake. At MSU, we can assist with such plant identification if you want to send us detailed photos of the species in a follow up email.
Second, if this is Purple Loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria), then you will want to report it to the Midwest Invasive Species Information Network (MISIN) here: https://www.misin.msu.edu/report/ MISIN also has several programs to help with aquatic invasive species. There is Exotic Aquatic Plant Watch program that help with the prevention and early detection of such species here: https://www.misin.msu.edu/projects/clmp/ and Michigan Paddle Stewards to restore our waters here: https://www.misin.msu.edu/projects/mipaddle/
Third, you could also reach out to the Michigan Invasive Species Coalition (CISMA) and speak to Dr. Shikha Singh. The email is <personal data hidden> and phone is<personal data hidden>. This group works in your county of Jackson. Their website is here to learn more about this group. https://www.michiganinvasives.org/jlwcisma/
Fourth, you will need to reach out to Michigan EGLE’s to become familiar with all of their requirements when using aquatic pesticides. You will need to apply for an aquatic herbicide permit if you want to do the herbicide application yourself or hire a trained aquatic herbicide applicator. The coordinator for Jackson County is Maddie Orler, <personal data hidden>,<personal data hidden>, Jackson (JDO).
Thank you for your question. Please let us know if you have any other questions.
Sincerely,
Lisa P
