Tree ID #934664

Asked June 08, 2026, 12:35 PM EDT

Please have a look and see if you can ID this tree. There are a number of aspens in the yard that have grown off the roots of a main aspen. I thought this was an aspen originally, but the leaves are much larger and it has rapidly grown leafed out later than the others. I’m wondering if it’s a cottonwood.

Expert Response

Hello!

Yes, that is a plains cottonwood; they do have a habit of seeding themselves into landscapes in the area.  Ultimately that will become a very large tree; you might consider removing it while it is small!

Good luck!

Cordially,

John
