Carpenter ants take advantage of existing rot to construct nests. There is probably existing wood rot within the trunk. Unfortunately, that is also one of the worst locations of damage for the health of the tree. There is a real risk this tree could come down if wind or other conditions weaken it further. I would recommend reaching out to an arborist to determine if it is in imminent danger of falling or if you have some extra time to keep this tree. Treesaregood.org has a tool to search for arborists by zip code.
