Using Old Ash from Firepit #934134

Asked June 04, 2026, 8:55 AM EDT

Hi. I have a lot of very old ash that came from burned up maple tree branches. I heard that it can be beneficial to gardens, but I'd like to know if I can just add it to the top of my flower gardens to seep in on its own or if I have to blend it into the existing dirt around my flowers. And how much should I add and how often? Thanks!

Thank you for reaching out.

Yes you can add the ash to your garden. Sift the ash to remove large chunks, and lightly dust a handful around the base of the plant. Always water it in gently after applying. Ash balances highly acidic soils. It is highly beneficial for brassicas (cabbage, broccoli) to prevent diseases like "club root" in acidic soil. Potassium-loving plants like tomatoes, peppers, beans, peas, fruit trees, and root crops (carrots, beets) benefit greatly from using ash.  Use only clean wood-nothing treated or containing chemicals.  It is suggested to only apply once a year.  Ash will also. Help control slugs and snails.

I hope this helps!
