Disposing of creeping bellflower #932735

Asked May 24, 2026, 2:50 PM EDT

Hello! I have been digging creeping bellflower out of my garden. Burning it is not an option. I currently have the plants and soil sealed in black plastic lawn bags. Will that enable the plants to decompose and roughly how long will that take? Is there a better way to get these plants to decompose? Thank you.

Expert Response

Thanks for the interesting question. I’ve not previously been asked this.

In researching this, decomposition takes much longer if soil is also present in the black bag. Several sources state that with such a method, and if the bag is left in the sun, complete decomposition could take as much as six months to occur.

I am not a resident of Hennepin County so I’m unfamiliar with the policies existing there. I would suggest that you contact the Minnesota Extension Office for Hennepin and pose your question to them. See:

Good luck. This might be a challenging situation. Thanks for consulting us.
