Identify plant please #932699

Asked May 23, 2026, 8:11 PM EDT

This plant is in my newer yard. I'm wondering if it's invasive? It has a woody stem, and is growing from short (6" or so) to quite tall--over 6'. No flowers that I know of. Wondering if this is nasty, or if I should keep it:) ha

Expert Response

Good Morning,

Thanks for your question.

I am sorry to say the plant in your photos is buckthorn. It is an invasive plant that will take over the understory of your woods and your garden if you do not eliminate it. It IS nasty!

Here are some links to deal with buckthorn: https://extension.umn.edu/identify-invasive-species/common-buckthorn

Glossy buckthorn: https://extension.umn.edu/identify-invasive-species/glossy-buckthorn

From the MN Department of Natural Resources: https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/invasives/terrestrialplants/woody/buckthorn/index.html

If you read through the above links, the seed is spread by birds. If you have trees that get berries on them in mid summer, those should be taken out first to reduce the spread of the plant. If you do nothing, the plant will take over the area, reducing wildlife habitat.

I also deal with buckthorn in my woods. It is an ongoing project.

Good Luck!
