Holes in apple tree leaves #931901

Asked May 16, 2026, 1:52 PM EDT

I just noticed our apple tree (state fair) has something eating the leaves. I have not seen any bugs or insects on the leaves. A few other of our apple trees have minimal leaves impacted but this state fair has over 50% effected. What could be causing this and any organic way to get it to stop?

Thank you for reaching out. I would definitely say you have something eating your leaves even if you can't see them. It's prime time for caterpillars. Also there are small beetles that eat leaves. You could try to spray the tree with neem oil or horticultural oil or even insecticidal soap. Without knowing exactly what it is, I'm not sure which one will work the best for you. Maybe you can talk to someone at the store to see what they would suggest. If you do use this, please be sure to follow the label instructions. It isn't totally organic, but it is definitely better than using pesticides. Good luck!
