Sycamore tree #931838

Asked May 15, 2026, 2:36 PM EDT

I bought this tree at Oakland Park and the top suffered from the deep freeze we had. They told me to cut off the frozen part. Is this tree in good shape to plant with the top part cut off?

Expert Response

Yes, a tree can survive if the top is cut off due to frost or freeze damage. Newly emerged foliage is highly vulnerable to freezing temperatures. Freeze damage (below 32°F) can cause leaves to shrivel, turn brown or black, become limp, and eventually drop.

Looks for signs of new growth like new leaf buds. That's a good sign it will survive. Proper care, especially watering during dry periods, helps recovery, particularly for newly planted trees. Fertilizer is not recommended for recovery from cold damage.
