Question about an American Yellowwood #931786

Asked May 15, 2026, 9:46 AM EDT

We recently noticed two places on our lovely American Yellowwood tree where the barks has "disappeared." Any ideas of the cause(s)? Anything we can do to prevent further damage and eventual deterioration?

Expert Response

Hi,

It looks like an animal gnawed on the bark, perhaps squirrels. There isn't anything that can be done. Callous tissue will start to form over the wounds eventually. Just monitor the tree for watering needs so it isn't drought-stressed. That will help with the recovery. We are in a prolonged drought throughout Maryland and watering even mature trees and shrubs will help with additional stress symptoms.

Thank you.  A very helpful response - and optimistic as well.
