Reason for dead grass and potential solutions? #931725

Asked May 14, 2026, 4:04 PM EDT

Hello, We have lived near the UMN St. Paul campus for 5 years and this is the first year that a large portion of our backyard grass has died. The ground is very hard and dry where it has died. The 'grass' seems to have little to no roots as it immediately comes up if we do a slight tug. I did not notice any bugs/larva, but I'm also not entirely sure where I would look or what I should be looking for. This past fall we planted several native plants. You can kind of see the chicken wire in the mulch where those are (top left of picture by the tree), but otherwise, we have made no changes to our yard, and we have not done anything different to our grass from previous years. Do you have any thoughts on what might have caused this? If it is caused by a pest, what would be the mitigation solution? And then are there recommendations for repopulating healthy grass? Thank you for your help!

Thank you for your question and photos for Extension Master Gardeners.  Have you noticed your dead grass can pull up easily or can be rolled up like a carpet? If yes, then you have Japanese beetle grub damage. The grubs feed on the roots of grass and damage large areas of turf. This might be why your grass can be pulled up easily. This Extension fact sheet shows pictures of grub damage, which looks similar to your picture:

The above link will also give you instructions to treat the white grubs in various circumstances and time of the year.

Another possibility is vole damage from the winter. You will see raised turf trails of the voles tunneling in the turf. I don't see obvious trails in your lawn but thought I'd provide this information for you. There are also various ways to handle vole damage in your yard which can be found in this article:

There are several ways to renovate or repair your lawn. This article will help you with repair and damage to your lawn:

I hope this information helps you and best of luck in recovering your lawn.

Hello,

Thank you for the response. Regarding the grass pulling up easily, it essentially wipes away if I gently brush over it with a foot. It doesn't really roll up nicely like carpet.

Thanks,
Emma

Hi Emma - if your grass is wiping away after you brush it with your foot, that tells me that the roots of the grass have been destroyed by grubs. Best of luck in treating your lawn and improving it.
