Why are they called Hood strawberries? #931478

Asked May 12, 2026, 2:50 PM EDT

I've read that Hood strawberries are named that because the tops resemble mountains, but haven't seen anything definitive. Can you confirm that they were in fact named after the mountain? Or, like the marionberry, were they named after the county they were primarily tested in?

Washington County Oregon

Hmm. I had read through the release on that page, and it doesn't say why. I was hoping there would be something more definitive from Waldo about the naming, such as the section on the naming of the Siletz from this circular he produced in 1956: https://ir.library.oregonstate.edu/concern/administrative_report_or_publications/6m311p46t?locale=en

I don't know that he created a similar publication for Hood, or if you would have a copy of it or if I'd be better asking the OSU archives. I'll check with them.

Thanks!
Laura
