Soil Testing #931134

Asked May 09, 2026, 11:31 AM EDT

Hi, I've been wanting to test my soil and never have. Is it too late? I've not planted yet. How do I go about doing this and can you help me to understand what kit to get and where to acquire it. I'm in Hood River. Thanks.

Expert Response

We don't have any testing at our Hood River, Wasco or Clackamas county offices, but there are online resources.

Here are soil testing services commonly used for garden soil testing:
A & L Western Labs (garden packages but also serves commercial farmers)
Western Laboratories, Inc. (garden packages but also serves commercial farmers)
Simply Soil Testing (just for gardens & landscapes)
• Mail-in kits are available from many farm and garden stores (check places like Wilco, Coastal, etc.)

Whatever company you decide to use, remember to check its website for fees and instructions on collecting and mailing samples.

Remember to list what plant you want to grow in the area you sampled (vegetables, lawn, fruit trees, blueberries, etc.) and request recommendations with the soil test. Then, you will get specific advice on adjusting the fertilizer rates and pH for optimum growth.
