Cause of white line around leaf of potato leaf tomato ceilings #930865

Asked May 06, 2026, 7:17 PM EDT

What is causing this? Is it necessary to destroy the whole plant or could one simply remove the leaves that are affected?

Expert Response

Neither -- the plant looks fine and does not need to be trimmed or discarded. If the plant is outside (how long? has it been out overnight recently?), the minor damage around the leaf margin is likely from environmental conditions like exposure to chilly temps (even if it was above freezing, warm-season vegetables are stressed or damaged by chills), too much direct sun (if the transplant wasn't fully acclimated to conditions outside of a greenhouse or house), or getting too dry between waterings. The rest of the leaf tissue is healthy and that leaf is still providing valuable carbohydrates for the plant, so we do not recommend removing it. As the plant matures, it will naturally shed its oldest, lowermost foliage anyway.
