Something is eating my rose bush leaves #930770

Asked May 05, 2026, 10:35 PM EDT

What could be causing the damage to the lower leaves of my lemon scented knockout rose bush? The upper leaves are still intact and the bush has flowers and buds. I do not see any visible insects.

Hi Patty,

I'm pretty sure we are looking at roseslug sawfly damage. These legless, tiny green larva are feeding on the undersides of the leaves. If you turn over some of yours, you may see them. Roses actually can get three different species of roseslug sawflies. All of them are legless and feed on the undersides of leaves. You can literally dislodge them with sprays of water. Since they don't have legs, they are unable to crawl back into the roses. Periodically checking the undersides of your rose leaves will prevent them from getting out of hand. Chemical control options are also contained in the link provided.
