Poison Ivy #930730

What would you recommend for poison ivy removal? Are herbicides safe? We live near a stream so we are reluctant to use herbicides.

Baltimore City County Maryland

Expert Response

Is the poison ivy near the stream edge? There are herbicides that are rated for aquatic use. Is the poison ivy in a place that you would come in contact with it and need it removed. It is a native plant with wildlife benefit, but obviously if it is in an area that you or a pet would come in contact, that would warrant removal.

If you want to use an herbicide, then look for ones labeled for poison ivy and aquatic safe.

You can also hand pull and continue doing so anytime it grows back. It may take multiple times of removing to exhauast the energy storage in any of the roots that are left behind. If you have a known allergy or want to be cautious, you should wear long sleeves, pants, gloves and can use a garbage bag to pull. The oil will remain on tools and clothes, so you should wash immediately afterwards and wipe down tools.

Our Posion Ivy resource page will have further details on identification and removal.
