Climbing Hydrangea question #930655

Asked May 05, 2026, 9:45 AM EDT

Good Morning, I'm thinking of making a large climbing hydrangea privacy wall to avoid having to see into my neighbors unsightly backyard. I'm was planning on using chicken wire as a lattice to support the plants as they grow and I'm wanting to make sure that the wire with 2" mesh would provide proper support. I did a google search and which said the mesh should be 4"-8". The wall will be rather tall, 12'-15', so I just am wanting to be sure. Thank you for your time. -RB

Please be advised that these questions are answered by UMN Extension Master Gardeners who are educated volunteers. When we answer these questions we do the same research that you have already done. The sources I read all say that the support should be sturdy and not smooth because the plant tendrels need something to cling to. The size of the mesh should not make any difference to the plant. Your 2 inch mesh should work. For general information

Paul,

I told the questioner that the surface should not be smooth because the tendrels need something to attach to. I don't understand why you are adding your comment. Linda G Tenneson
