Black Cherry Trees vs. Japanese Beetles #930646

Asked May 05, 2026, 8:17 AM EDT

The Japanese beetles eat the leaves off of the black cherry trees that I buy, killing the trees. I have wild black cherry trees that they don't touch, red cherry they don't touch. They also like red raspberries and the leaves sort of. This is Calhoun county. I want to produce black cherries in volume. How are other farms able to keep their trees from dying from Japanese Beetles

Expert Response

Hello,

For most commercial growers Japanese beetles are more or less controlled by the summer insecticide cover sprays, that is to say is that specific control is not always needed. We have this article from 2011 on managing Japanese beetles in fruit crops, just cross-reference any listed products to make sure that they are still labeled for use. If you don't have an RUP permit then the repellent type products are your main options (Neem, surround, pyganic, etc.)

From our fruit management guide:

"Japanese beetle adults can be controlled with many of the conventional contact poisons (organophosphates, carbamates, pyrethroids), but high rates and good plant coverage (aerial applications often are not sufficient) are essential to provide a lethal dose. Neonicotinoid compounds (Admire, Actara, Belay and Assail) control Japanese beetle adults by providing a combination of lethal and anti-feeding activity on the pest. Several novel compounds such as SURROUND WP (kaolin), pyrethrum-based products (i.e., PyGanic and Evergreen) and Neem-based products (i.e., Aza-Direct, Ecozen and Neemix) provide significant repellency effects but have limited lethal activity. These compounds have the advantage of short preharvest intervals compared with most conventional insecticides. Controlling larvae is not effective in commercial orchards, but the natural insecticide Bacillus popillae, marketed as DOOM, Japademic and other names, will provide persistent but low levels of larval control."
