Bites but no bugs #930635

Asked May 05, 2026, 6:07 AM EDT

I have checked the lining of this bed after i recently moved in.

No reddish or red spots anywhere...no corpses of bugs or larva... And nothing related To bed bugs ... Bites also lack Red ring.

I assume its chiggers...But.. its been going on for several days...and i can FEEL then when they bite....and bites appear moments after bite... with no bug anywhere near the location

I actually felt something on my back before waking up to a no bite there....So im not entirely sure what im dealing with...

Currently in houston Texas and i do not walk in grassy areas with bushes and whatnot...

and this is also appearing on my fingers as well...not arms..wrists ankles nor groin

just top of feet and fingers....

Without an actual insect, I cannot tell you what may be biting you.  Chiggers tend to bite where clothing is constricted, so I don't think that is making the bites. See this publication from Texas A & M Extension, Chiggers. Do you have any pets?  If so, fleas could be a possibility.  If not, if could be that the previous occupants did and fleas were left behind.  I moved into a rental years ago and the previous renters had pets and fleas.  We worked for over two months to eliminate them.  See this publication from Texas A & M Extension, Fleas. Contact your local Extension Service Office in Harris County for further assistance.  Thank you for using Ask Extension.

After checking for a few days and whatnot

Its almost instantaneous with a mild feeling of crawling right beforehand

it seems the crawling and bites stop whenever theres light...

and immediately after getting bit id pull out a flashlight to discover Nothing

I can only assume its microscopic Mites that live near my feet...whats weird is its not going anywhere past my ankles

Only at my feet...nor the bottom of the feet or at the actual ankles themselves... DEET has been working since ive made this post but oh my lord is it annoying...

I will get Sterifom or whatever its called... going to spray the mattress a few times and spray the sheets and then wash them to see if that works

Other things to consider, though I would think it would affect your entire body - new laundry detergent? new medication? body soap/cream? exposure to something else that might only affect hands & feet?  Thank you for using Ask Extension.
